Babies, Breast Milk & Borders (Intl)
Traveling international with babies, or without babies but packing milk, varies quite a bit across countries and I found it difficult to find accurate information online. Below are a few examples from my own experiences and links I was able to find, but you should do your own research before trying to carry on milk.
Austria: Going through international customs had me a bit nervous (we flew out of this airport back to US) but it was smooth, however, they make you put the bottles of milk in their own bin, not inside a cooler, and they inspect the bottles. Their website says a limit of 100 ml and consider it “medical need” in nature (see link below). It was a bit crowded so the milk sat out for probably 15 minutes while we waited in line, it was fine, but not the best experience. (Vienna VIE)
England: They were very strict and since I had my baby allowed the milk, but said if I did not, they would not have allowed any more than 180 ml of milk to be brought through (~3 oz) TSA. This was LHR (London Heathrow). That said, if you look at their website, it says you can bring up to 2L. https://www.heathrow.com/at-the-airport/terminal-facilities/family-facilities
Germany: TSA literally told me I could bring anything I needed for the littles. We had our 6mos old and 2.5 year old. They picked up the bottles of milk and looked at them, but that was it. We flew out of Dusseldorf Airport (DUS). Their traveling with children link makes it easy and this airport was very manageable, even the car rental is attached so no shuttles to get on and off.
Mexico: I was in Mexico for 5 days for work and pumped 65 oz to bring back. I was told I wouldn’t be able to carry it on without having a baby with me (I was there for work, and didn’t bring my infant). I put it in my insulated bag, packed with a big bag of ice from the vending machine and all of the milk was frozen. I wrapped it in a rain jacket to help insulate further and stuffed it in the middle of my suitcase. I’m a little type A, so I put tape around each milk pack top and signed it so I knew if it had been tampered with. It made it through just fine, half stayed frozen completely, the other bags were defrosted so I used them to feed baby when I got home. Mexico City Airport (MEX)
